My new (new to me 1995) Savage has been neglected somewhat. It runs, but barely. When I got it home, I discovered rust in the tank. The gas smelled old also. Using Clymer, I've sucessfully removed the tank and managed to drain the old gas which had considerable (maybe 1/2 cup solids) fine rust in it. I removed the petcock and in-tank filter as well. The filter was not clogged and had no accumulation of rust on it. I don't know what shape the carb is in but since the filter was in good shape, I'm hoping it isn't gunked up. What's the best method for removing the rust from the tank? Or does it matter that much if I manage to get the tank well flushed? Sorry. This is new to me.
